Ok so, we’re going to give this blogging yet ANOTHER try. Part keeping everyone updated and maybe finding a blogging niche, part self-care journaling. Together, they’ll make a fun read!
I started Babu’s in October of 2021 after I had left teaching special education at public school and also had a quick stint as a mentor teacher at WGU. My heart was not in education anymore and I was tired of working for a crumbling ungrateful system. Babu’s was born as I was growing my interest in baking and liked the idea of a cheap buy-in to try out initially with Cottage Foods.
We’re now in early 2025 and a lot has been tried and adjusted. In August of 2024, I accepted a special education teaching position at my son, Viv’s, K-8 charter school. He was attending the first grade and I was teaching middle school. As some of you may know, my son is autistic and on an IEP. For an entire semester he received practically zero academic services (math and reading support). It was breaking my heart going into school every day and working with my middle school students on IEPs, only to have my son receiving nothing and falling behind. I decided to hang on and finish out the semester, but resigned and withdrew my son. Still deciding on how I should handle anything with the charter…
So, now I’m homeschooling Viv. It is extremely rewarding and he is crushing it, knocking out a semester in a month. It’s such a shame that this is how we had to come to this, but we’ve made it and we’re progressing and learning more about each other every day. I’ve heard that homeschooling is the ultimate IEP, and I definitely believe it. We don’t move on to the next concept until he masters the previous one. He will never get left behind. Granted, he doesn’t have the best sense of personal space with mama and has the most energy I’ve seen a single mammal exude in a day, but I feel like I know some much more about him and that I have 100000% made the right choice.
I am hoping to get into my homeschooling groove more and more and will have more time to focus on my baking business. I’m definitely planning on doing farmers markets this summer-applying to Southlands, Parker, Castle Rock, maybe a few Golden pop-ins. I’m hoping to get Viv more involved, too, with the business and being my market buddy and maybe baking up some cookies to sell under my obnoxious-ly orange tent!
HEADS UP, also planning a yard/bake sale in my neighborhood in March! Stay tuned!
